Bordentown is pumped up about new fitness center
NFL wide receiver-turned-fitness mogul Kevin Johnson is bringing his Team 85 health center to Bor dentown.
Johnson, formerly of the Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Baltimore Ravens and Detroit Lions, plans to construct a five- building fitness center complete with medical center, training facility and office complex.
Construction on the site will begin as soon as possible, said Werner B. Nitschmann, township director of community development. Johnson and his representatives declined to comment.
According to Team 85's website, the center -- to be built on Route 130 next to Mastoris Diner -- should be finished in 2009. The site currently houses grain silos that are being demolished.
When completed, the Team 85 site will house a 78,000-square-foot medical center, a 30,000-square-foot office building, a 75,000-square-foot fitness center with a 26,000-square-foot training facility behind it, and a 3,000-square-foot pad for a bank, according to Nitschmann.
Nitschmann said the training facility will be an outdoor, closed-in area.
He said Team 85 saw Borden town as the "place to be" when they applied to build in the township.
The buildings will be outfitted with red brick and the facility is set to include four entrance and exit lanes.
"They're going to do a lot of landscaping," Nitschmann added.
At the planning board's June 12 meeting, Nitschmann said the developers were granted a few minor variances. He said the township did not technically have to make the developers present before the board because the site is a redevelopment site. However, Nitschmann said the township had Team 85 present anyway for the benefit of the public.
