Stuart fitness center owner charged with grand theft
A warrant for the arrest of Nadir Giga, a former fitness center operator, was issued, charging him with grand theft and accusing him of signing a new member although he's facing eviction.
The Miramar resident operated Sporthouse Fitness at 41 S.W. Monterey Road until he was evicted from the property less than a year after opening and his equipment was repossessed, according to Martin County Sheriff's Office reports.
Several frustrated members contacted the state Division of Consumer Services and filed offense reports with the Martin County Sheriff's Office, complaining the facility closed without notice, breaking most of their membership contracts.
One contract was signed the week before Giga, 25, was forced to close the center.
Charles and Dana Suivski of Stuart signed a contract for a 99-day membership on Jan. 16 despite previous concerns with the establishment's financial stability, according to a Martin County Sheriff's Office offense report.
Charles Suivski met with Giga before handing over the $423.72 check and was reassured that Giga's past financial troubles were just that - something of the past, according to the report. The check was cashed and cleared by Jan. 18, according to the report. On Jan. 24 , members learned that the gym was closed until further notice, according to the report.
