Pilot fitness program launches for Knox Co. students
Knox County officials launched a pilot program Monday to help students get fit and stay that way.
It's called GoTrybe.com and it's the first interactive, online community for kids.
The program is designed to increase physical activity and teach kids about nutrition. It's designed to combat obesity in 9th through 12th graders.
The Web site has workout videos, daily tips on healthy food choices and motivation to keep at it.
With the state Legislature mandating 90 minutes of physical activity per week for students, a representative of GoTrybe.com say it's a good fit for Tennessee.
"This tool allows them to not only provide that physical activity but also to log all the minutes on the back end and provide reporting back to the schools and back to the states," Jose Castillo says.
Several Knox County schools are among the first of 17 districts to receive access to the GoTrybe program.
It's funded by a grant from the Center for Diabetes Prevention and Health Improvement.
If the pilot program is successful here, it could branch out to other schools in the state.
