Medical Center 6K benefits children's fitness program: Celebrate good health at race, walk
Celebrate good health with friends and family at the Medical Center 6K on Mother's Day - this Sunday - beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Online registration is available at www.medicalcenter6k. com. Proceeds from the seventh annual race will benefit Fitness University, a free fitness and running program for children.
This year's race has been designated a New England Grand Prix event. The USATF-certified course starts at the Medical Center's main campus in downtown Nashua and heads south, cutting through the Rivier College campus and passing the fairways of Nashua Country Club.
A 1-1/4-mile walking course will begin at the same time as the race, winding through several neighborhood streets before heading back to the finish line.
Children will receive special prizes for participating in the walk.
Typically, one special "mom" is selected as grand marshall for the race. This year, in a well-deserved break with tradition, three sisters - all of them mothers - will share the honors: Medical Center employee Donna Stone of Merrimack and her sisters, Laura Jutras of Manchester and Julie Paul of Scituate, Mass.
Two years ago, Jutras, then 31, was diagnosed with cancer. After going through chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, her doctors advised her to exercise and stay in shape to help prevent a recurrence. That's all it took for Stone and Paul to join with Jutras in training for the Medical Center's 2007 6K.
Online registration fees are $20 for runners and $10 for walkers. All participants age 12 and younger are free. Prizes include running hats for the first 400 registered runners and walkers and Red Sox tickets for an early summer game at Fenway Park for the overall male and female winners.
Celebrate family fitness, win prizes and support Fitness University, which works to improve children's health in our community. To register, visit www.medicalcenter6k.com or call 577-2255.
